Trump Comments on Controversial Caribbean Drug Operations

Post by : Meena Hassan

President Donald Trump addressed the recent criticism regarding a US military follow-up strike on a Caribbean boat that was implicated in drug trafficking. This operation reportedly killed survivors of an earlier missile attack.

He stated, “I wouldn’t have wanted” another strike on the vessel, in reference to the September 2 operation, which is the first publicly acknowledged within a series of assaults on suspected drug-related boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific.

Sources indicated that, following the initial strike, two individuals were observed clinging to the flaming vessel before US forces executed a second strike. Allegations surfaced that troops had orders to “eliminate everyone on board.”

Defending Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Trump remarked, “I’m going to find out about it, but Pete said he did not authorize the death of those two men.” He added, “We’ll investigate, but no, I wouldn’t want that — not a second strike. The first one was very lethal.”

Hegseth has characterized the reports as untrue.

Since September, US airstrikes targeting suspected drug-trafficking vessels in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific have reportedly resulted in at least 83 fatalities. There are growing concerns regarding the legality of these strikes, prompting calls for a comprehensive investigation into their nature as potential extrajudicial killings.

Leaders from both parties in Congress have announced intentions to compile a complete account of the operations. Meanwhile, Hegseth faced backlash for sharing a spoof book cover online featuring Franklin the Turtle in military attire aimed at targeting boats, intensifying the surrounding controversy.
