US President Donald Trump has publicly defended Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, asserting that he had no prior knowledge of journalist Jamal Khashoggi's 2018 assassination. Trump's remarks, made during the Crown Prince's visit to Washington, have reignited global discussions around accountability and the dynamics of US-Saudi relations.
Referring to the incident as “a huge mistake,” Trump echoed Saudi claims that the kingdom pursued “all the right steps” in addressing the murder within its Istanbul consulate. Khashoggi, an outspoken critic of Saudi policies and a columnist for the Washington Post, was brutally killed and dismembered by Saudi agents—an act that shocked the world and strained relations between the two nations.
In defiance of US intelligence analyses released in 2021, which indicated that MBS likely sanctioned the operation, Trump maintained his support for the Crown Prince. “Whether you like him or not, incidents happen,” Trump commented, labeling Khashoggi as “extremely controversial” and noting that many were not fans of the journalist. He also urged journalists to refrain from “embarrassing our guest” by inquiring about the tragic event.
Resetting US-Saudi Relations
This visit marks MBS's first return to the White House in seven years, indicating a desire to mend ties following years of diplomatic friction. Trump welcomed him, calling the Crown Prince a “crucial figure” in the future of the Middle East.
According to Trump, under MBS's leadership, Saudi Arabia has made “remarkable progress” in human rights—claims that are challenged by various international watchdog organizations.
Human Rights Concerns Arise
In response, human rights advocates slammed Trump’s statements as “shameful” and “deeply troubling.” They contend that systemic repression continues in Saudi Arabia, where journalists and political opponents are frequently jailed and face harsh sentences, including executions.
Critics are particularly concerned about an alarming rise in executions, many politically motivated. Robert Weissman, co-president of Public Citizen, argued that Trump's remarks reflect his “personal business interests” with Saudi leadership and serve to downplay a brutal murder.
“These comments are an attempt to whitewash a horrific act,” he stated, emphasizing that trivializing Khashoggi's killing sends a “dangerous message” to authoritarian regimes worldwide.
Saudi Arabia's Stance: Encouraging Responsibility
Prince Mohammed bin Salman has persistently denied directing the murder. During their talks in Washington, he characterized the killing as “painful” and a “huge mistake” made by rogue actors within the system, claiming that Saudi Arabia took “all the right steps” afterward.
Nevertheless, critics maintain that Saudi investigations were neither transparent nor aligned with international accountability standards.
Relevance of the Issue Now
This renewed dialogue emerges at a crucial point in global geopolitics. Given shifting alliances, energy demand fluctuations, and increasing regional unrest, the importance of the US-Saudi relationship remains high. However, Trump's remarks clash with his own intelligence agencies, prompting vital inquiries:
Can the US maintain moral authority while overlooking significant human rights violations?
Will this set a dangerous precedent for future diplomatic dealings?
Does this increase mistrust between Washington and its intelligence community?
As global reactions mount, the debate over accountability for Jamal Khashoggi’s murder continues. With Trump publicly aligning himself with the Saudi Crown Prince once more, the topic is expected to remain under intense scrutiny internationally.
