U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Japan later this month, followed by South Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, as confirmed by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Wednesday. Although the specific dates for Trump's Japan visit remain undisclosed, officials indicate it will take place before the APEC summit kicks off on October 31.
Bessent remarked at a Washington event, “We’re organizing a visit. The president will go to Japan first, then proceed to Korea for the APEC gathering where leaders will convene.”
In addition to the APEC summit, Trump plans to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Kuala Lumpur from October 26 to 28. Here, he is expected to witness the ceremonial signing of a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, which follows recent violent clashes at their border.
This forthcoming trip to Asia arrives amid escalating trade tensions with China, which is now the second-largest economy globally, right after the U.S. Earlier this year, a tariff conflict between Washington and Beijing interrupted global supply chains, leading both countries to impose significant tariffs on each other's goods. Although tensions seemed to wane momentarily, China recently revealed new restrictions on rare earth exports, prompting Trump to threaten a hefty 100 percent tariff on Chinese imports starting November 1.
Despite these trade disputes, Trump is anticipated to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea during the APEC summit. Previously, Trump hinted that the meeting could be canceled in light of China’s export restrictions, but Bessent conveyed optimism that the scheduled talks will continue as planned.
Meanwhile, Japan's political landscape faces uncertainty, adding layers to Trump’s visit as Sanae Takaichi aims to be the country’s first female prime minister following the recent dissolution of the ruling coalition. Analysts believe this scenario may affect the discussions Trump has with Japanese officials during his stay.
Trump’s travels to Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia highlight the U.S. commitment to bolstering both diplomatic and economic relations in the Asia-Pacific area, all while navigating trade issues and geopolitical hurdles.
