Tabuk Farmers Start Growing High-Value Turmeric Crop

Tabuk Farmers Start Growing High-Value Turmeric Crop

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Tabuk Region has taken an important step toward agricultural innovation by successfully growing turmeric for the first time. This achievement shows that the region can expand its farming abilities and add more valuable crops to its production list. Local farmers and experts believe that this effort will open doors for more profitable and diverse crops in the coming years.

The successful cultivation was highlighted by farmer Abdulmajeed Al-Atwi, who explained that turmeric is not commonly found in this part of the country. He said the crop has major nutritional and economic importance, making it a valuable addition to local farms. Turmeric is a root-based plant that usually grows in semi-tropical climates, so it requires careful attention, proper seed selection, and the right planting time to ensure healthy growth.

According to Al-Atwi, turmeric needs a growth period of eight to ten months. During this long cycle, the plant must be watered regularly, but without letting the soil become too wet. For this reason, farmers rely on controlled irrigation systems that provide enough water while preventing waterlogging. He said the best results come from using organic fertilizers along with small amounts of NPK nutrients. These support the plant’s development and increase the overall quality of the crop.

Soil aeration is another essential requirement for turmeric farming. Al-Atwi explained that drip irrigation helps keep the soil airy, which allows the roots to grow better and stay healthy. This method is especially useful in regions where water must be used wisely and efficiently. With these careful methods, farmers in Tabuk have been able to grow turmeric that matches high-quality standards.

Al-Atwi also pointed out that the value of turmeric does not end when it is harvested. The processing stage plays a key role in determining the product’s final quality. Farmers must sort the roots, dry them properly, and control moisture levels to achieve the best results. If these steps are completed with care, the turmeric becomes highly desirable in the market.

The turmeric produced in Tabuk has already gained strong local acceptance. People appreciate its quality and the fact that it is grown locally, as turmeric is not commonly cultivated in the region. Because of this rarity, buyers see it as a valuable product with special characteristics.

Al-Atwi believes that the introduction of turmeric farming is more than just a new crop; it is a sign of progress for regional agriculture. He said that adding such crops improves the agricultural landscape, especially when combined with sustainable practices and the use of organic materials. These methods help the environment and improve the long-term health of farmland.

He also emphasized the importance of developing local processing industries. Turmeric can be turned into many products such as oils, powders, and natural supplements. Creating local factories for these items would allow farmers to benefit even more from the crop, increase economic returns, and support new job opportunities in the region.

Farmers in Tabuk see this development as a positive model for future agricultural projects. The success of turmeric cultivation proves that new and valuable crops can grow well in the region if they are supported by scientific methods, smart water use, and modern farming techniques. As the region continues to explore new possibilities, turmeric stands out as a symbol of innovation, sustainability, and economic potential.
