Typhoon Fung-wong struck northern Philippines over the weekend, leading to eight confirmed deaths and displacing more than 1.4 million individuals. This latest storm hit as the nation was still recovering from Typhoon Kalmaegi, triggering severe floods, landslides, and widespread power outages across several provinces.
Known locally as Uwan, Fung-wong made landfall in Aurora province as a super typhoon, with sustained winds reaching 185 kph (115 mph) and gusts up to 230 kph (143 mph). Although it weakened while moving inland, heavy downpours continued to threaten northern regions and Metro Manila.
Several fatalities were reported due to landslides and flash floods. In Catanduanes, a drowning incident claimed one life, while a house collapse in Catbalogan city added to the toll. In Nueva Vizcaya, three children lost their lives in separate landslides and an elderly person perished in a mudslide in Barlig, Mountain Province. Additionally, a landslide in Lubuagan, Kalinga province, resulted in two fatalities with two villagers still unaccounted for.
Prior to the storm's arrival, over 1.4 million displaced residents sought refuge in emergency shelters or with family. Approximately 318,000 individuals remained in evacuation centers as of Monday. Flooding impacted at least 132 villages, forcing some residents onto rooftops, while numerous homes and roads were damaged due to landslides.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had previously declared a state of emergency in response to the destruction caused by Typhoon Kalmaegi and the looming threat of Fung-wong. In light of the storm, schools and government offices closed, and significant disturbances were reported in air and sea travel, with over 325 domestic and 61 international flights canceled, stranding more than 6,600 commuters at ports.
As the storm continues its path towards Taiwan, authorities have warned of ongoing risks from heavy rainfall. Rescue operations, relief efforts, and disaster-response initiatives are actively underway to support impacted communities, restore power, and clear obstructed roadways.
The Philippines is familiar with roughly 20 typhoons each year and is notably vulnerable to natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Fung-wong adds to a series of extreme weather occurrences, underscoring the pressing need for enhanced disaster preparedness and emergency response strategies.
