The Philippines is dealing with the severe aftermath of Super Typhoon Fung-Wong, which struck the nation after recently devastating the region with Typhoon Kalmaegi. This latest storm has necessitated the evacuation of over a million citizens and submerged entire communities.
Fung-Wong made landfall on the eastern coast on Sunday night, uprooting trees, flooding various towns, and causing widespread power outages across numerous provinces. It impacted almost the entire country, particularly in Cagayan, Catanduanes, and parts of Luzon.
In Cagayan, rescue workers reported that the Chico River overflowed, leading to urgent evacuation measures. Footage revealed residents trapped on their rooftops as water levels rose dramatically. In Tuguegarao, located approximately 30 kilometers from the river, large areas of the city were underwater.
Aurora province has also suffered significant damage, with landslides obstructing major roads and electricity remaining out in multiple towns. “We were unable to respond last night due to heavy rainfall and high water levels,” remarked a local rescuer from Dipaculao town.
Samar province, still recovering from the impact of Typhoon Kalmaegi, has recorded its first casualty from Fung-Wong—a 64-year-old woman who drowned in Catbalogan City amid fierce winds and rain. Additionally, another death was reported on Catanduanes Island due to flash floods. Residents described storm surges that transformed streets into torrents, partially submerging homes and churches.
The typhoon is currently progressing towards Taiwan, where forecasts indicate potentially up to 350 millimeters (14 inches) of rain within a 24-hour period, prompting evacuations in susceptible areas. Meteorologists caution that climate change is amplifying storms worldwide, as warmer oceans and moist air contribute to the rapid intensification of typhoons.
Cleanup efforts are ongoing in the Philippines, with President Ferdinand Marcos extending the “state of national calamity” originally declared due to Kalmaegi for an entire year, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
The combined devastation from Typhoons Kalmaegi and Fung-Wong raises alarms concerning the Philippines' increasing vulnerability to extreme weather, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced infrastructure resilience and emergency preparedness.
