The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has referred individuals implicated in a significant arms smuggling case related to Sudan to judicial authorities, as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) on Friday.
This matter stems from the apprehension of a group attempting to illicitly transport military equipment through UAE territory to Sudan’s Port Sudan Authority. This incident, which occurred on April 30, prompted an immediate and comprehensive inquiry by UAE officials, showcasing the nation’s firm opposition to illegal arms trafficking.
In an official statement, MoFA highlighted that this referral signifies the UAE’s “steadfast dedication to thwarting misuse of its territories, ports, or airspace for unlawful acts, including arms smuggling to conflicting parties in Sudan or other war zones.”
The UAE has persistently implemented proactive strategies to combat transnational organized crime and prevent the nation from becoming a conduit for illegal arms. By taking this step, the UAE not only reinforces its national legal framework but also aligns with international security obligations, including compliance with UN Security Council directives and international law.
The Ministry reiterated that this case underscores the UAE’s ongoing commitment to preserving international peace and security. “Our stringent approach to this situation exemplifies our dedication to enhancing global initiatives aimed at reducing illegal arms trade and upholding the rule of law,” the statement emphasized.
