UAE Highlights Humanitarian Role at IPU Middle East Meeting

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Sara Mohammad Falaknaz, Vice Chair of the UAE Parliamentary Division in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), participated in the Committee on Middle East Questions during the 151st IPU Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland. The meeting brought together parliamentarians to discuss political, security, social, and humanitarian challenges facing the Middle East.

In her intervention, Falaknaz highlighted that the Middle East is experiencing a sensitive phase marked by complex political and security issues, along with social and humanitarian challenges. She stressed the importance of wisdom, dialogue, and bridge-building to address crises effectively.

Falaknaz emphasized that achieving inclusive and equitable sustainable development is crucial for ensuring stability and prosperity for the peoples of the region. She urged the international community to prioritize cooperation and dialogue to create lasting solutions.

The Vice Chair spotlighted the UAE’s pioneering humanitarian role in Gaza, under the leadership’s directives through Operation Chivalrous Knight 3. Over the past two years, the UAE has provided aid exceeding US$1.8 billion, delivered by land, sea, and air.

Falaknaz detailed the UAE’s assistance, which included supplying food, clothing, and medical supplies, evacuating the injured for treatment in the UAE, offering psychological support and rehabilitation, and expanding hospitals. The UAE also restored health centres, supplied drinking water through desalination plants, repaired wells, ran vaccination campaigns for children, and supported education with school bags.

Additionally, the UAE operated bakeries to meet daily needs and provided continuous support for healthcare, education, and infrastructure. These efforts showcase the UAE’s commitment to humanitarian aid and its leadership role in supporting vulnerable populations in the region.

The committee meeting also reviewed a report on its role within the IPU, including monitoring Middle East issues and supporting peace efforts. Members discussed proposed amendments to the committee’s structure and rules of procedure, ensuring more effective oversight and international cooperation.

Falaknaz’s intervention reinforced the UAE’s dedication to promoting dialogue, sustainable development, and humanitarian assistance in the Middle East. The participation of the UAE Parliamentary Division underscores the nation’s active role in regional and global efforts to achieve peace, stability, and prosperity.
