The growing popularity of e-scooters across the United Arab Emirates has brought increased convenience for commuters, but new figures indicate that safety concerns are rising just as quickly. Fresh traffic data and public surveys have revealed a significant increase in serious e-scooter accidents, prompting calls for stronger enforcement and greater rider awareness.
According to an analysis of Ministry of Interior traffic records conducted by RoadSafetyUAE, major e-scooter accidents surged by 97 percent in 2025 compared with the previous year. The wider micro-mobility sector, including bicycles, motorcycles and electric bikes, also recorded a substantial increase in major accidents, highlighting broader safety challenges on UAE roads.
A nationwide survey involving more than 1,000 residents found that unsafe riding behaviour remains one of the biggest concerns. An overwhelming majority of respondents reported regularly witnessing reckless riding, while many admitted feeling unsafe around e-scooter users due to violations of traffic regulations and risky manoeuvres in public spaces.
Helmet compliance emerged as a major issue in the study. Many respondents said they frequently observe riders travelling without protective gear despite existing regulations. Concerns were also raised about underage riders, riding against traffic flow, using prohibited pedestrian areas and operating scooters at night without proper lighting.
Despite the safety concerns, e-scooters continue to play an important role in urban transportation. Many residents view them as an affordable and efficient mobility option that helps reduce travel times and supports sustainable transport initiatives across major cities in the UAE.
Road safety experts believe that the rapid growth of e-scooter usage requires a balanced approach that combines education, infrastructure and enforcement. Calls are growing for the development of additional dedicated scooter lanes, safer crossings and designated riding zones to reduce conflicts between riders, pedestrians and motorists.
Authorities and safety organisations are also encouraging stronger public awareness campaigns focused on helmet use, age restrictions and responsible riding behaviour. Experts believe that improved compliance with existing regulations, supported by better infrastructure, could significantly reduce accident rates while preserving the benefits of micro-mobility solutions.
