Silal and Limagrain Join to Boost Crop Resilience in UAE

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The United Arab Emirates is advancing agricultural research with the launch of the Center of Excellence for Abiotic Resilience and Crop Genomics (ARC-GEN) in Al Ain. This initiative is the result of a collaboration between Silal, the UAE’s leading agri-food and technology company, and Limagrain Vegetable Seeds (LVS), a global leader in seed innovation. The partnership aims to develop vegetable varieties capable of thriving under extreme conditions while improving crop productivity and sustainability.

ARC-GEN will operate from the Silal Innovation Oasis, a state-of-the-art facility designed to support pioneering research. The center will focus on innovations that safeguard food production and enhance agricultural resilience both locally and internationally. By combining Silal’s local expertise with Limagrain’s global technology, the UAE aims to strengthen its position as a leader in climate-resilient farming solutions.

Focus on Resilient Crops

The collaboration will emphasize creating crops that can withstand heat, drought, and soil salinity—challenges that are increasingly common due to climate change. Researchers will use advanced genomics and plant science to develop vegetable varieties that maintain high yields under harsh environmental conditions. These efforts are expected to improve food security and support sustainable farming practices in the region.

Two Main Research Streams

ARC-GEN will operate through two dedicated research streams. The Plant Physiology Research Unit will study how plants respond to environmental stresses and identify seed types best suited for arid conditions. This unit will analyze plant behavior under extreme heat, limited water, and high salinity to optimize growth and productivity.

The Gene Editing Research Unit will focus on advanced techniques to improve plant genes. By enhancing genetic traits, researchers aim to create vegetable varieties that are hardier, more productive, and resilient to climate challenges. This combination of plant physiology studies and gene editing will accelerate the development of innovative, climate-smart crops.

Alignment with National Food Security Strategy

The ARC-GEN initiative aligns with the UAE’s National Food Security Strategy 2051, which emphasizes expanding local agricultural production and building sustainable food systems. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and research, the center will contribute to achieving national goals for food self-sufficiency and climate-adapted farming practices.

Global Impact and Collaboration

Experts note that initiatives like ARC-GEN are vital in the face of climate change, particularly for arid regions where agriculture faces significant challenges. The center serves as a model for integrating science, technology, and global expertise to enhance crop resilience. Other countries facing similar environmental pressures may look to replicate the UAE’s approach to secure sustainable food production.

With the launch of ARC-GEN, the UAE is setting a benchmark for agricultural innovation in the Middle East. The center is expected to deliver new solutions for resilient farming, ensuring food security while promoting sustainability. By combining research excellence with practical applications, Silal and Limagrain aim to transform the agricultural landscape, preparing the UAE to meet future challenges in food production.
