The United Arab Emirates has launched humanitarian aid operations in response to severe flooding in multiple regions of Sri Lanka. The devastating floods have caused at least 355 deaths, affected over one million people, and damaged hundreds of homes. In swift action, the UAE deployed specialised search-and-rescue teams and sent more than 20 tonnes of emergency relief supplies to the hardest-hit areas.
The mission, coordinated by the Joint Operations Command, involves teams from the UAE Aid Agency, the Emirates Red Crescent Authority, and Abu Dhabi Civil Defense. These teams are reaching the most vulnerable communities, delivering food, essential shelter materials, and other emergency items to support residents impacted by the floods and landslides.
The UAE’s response reflects its longstanding commitment to international humanitarian principles. By providing a rapid and comprehensive aid package, the country aims to support the Sri Lankan government’s efforts to restore normalcy, reduce suffering, and assist in early recovery. The floods have disrupted essential services, leaving many communities without access to clean water, food, and basic necessities.
Dr. Hamdan bin Musallam Al Mazrouei, Chairman of the Emirates Red Crescent Authority, highlighted the UAE’s global role in disaster relief operations. He emphasised the importance of rapid emergency response, deployment of skilled teams, and implementation of programs to mitigate the effects of natural disasters, citing the recent floods and landslides in Sri Lanka as a critical example.
Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, underlined the UAE’s ongoing commitment to its international responsibilities. He assured that additional emergency supplies and shelter materials would be sent to accelerate relief efforts, help affected families, and support early recovery.
The UAE’s operations in Sri Lanka include coordinated logistics to reach isolated regions, medical support for injured individuals, and distribution of essential relief items to ensure survival and protection of affected populations. The mission demonstrates the UAE’s dedication to providing timely assistance to communities struck by natural disasters globally, aiming to alleviate suffering and strengthen resilience during crises.
Through this comprehensive intervention, the UAE continues to solidify its reputation as a global leader in humanitarian support. By combining resources, expertise, and rapid deployment capabilities, the country ensures that flood-affected people in Sri Lanka receive immediate aid and assistance, fostering hope and stability during one of the nation’s most challenging times.
