UAE Hosts Nature Guardians Majlis At UNGA 80 In New York

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), in cooperation with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), hosted the first-ever Nature Guardians Majlis in New York on Monday. The event took place on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The Majlis introduced the Emirati model of dialogue to a global audience, creating a platform for open discussion and cooperative action on nature and climate challenges.

High-Level Participation

The Nature Guardians Majlis gathered ministers, ambassadors, nature envoys, and representatives from leading international organisations, including the IUCN. Participants discussed pressing global challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss, exploring strategies to protect natural ecosystems and promote sustainable environmental practices. The assembly provided an opportunity for cross-border collaboration and exchange of innovative solutions.

UAE Commitment To Environmental Stewardship

Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, opened the session, highlighting the UAE’s strong commitment to multilateralism and environmental protection. She underscored the country’s leadership role in global conservation efforts, emphasizing the importance of bridging the gap between ambition and actionable outcomes.

Focus On Biodiversity Preservation

Dr. Al Dahak emphasized that preserving biodiversity requires immediate collaboration and strong partnerships. She said, “It is clear that all is not lost, and we will overcome barriers to drive momentum towards a green world where ecosystems thrive. By uniting our efforts, we can ensure a sustainable future for both nature and humanity.” Her remarks highlighted the urgency of translating environmental goals into tangible action.

IUCN Perspective

IUCN President Razan Al Mubarak addressed the Majlis, highlighting the Union’s mission and the importance of the upcoming IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 in Abu Dhabi. She noted that the Congress would provide a platform to elevate ambition, foster collaboration, and deliver solutions that balance the needs of people and nature. She stressed that inclusive, equitable, and science-based approaches are key to securing a thriving future.

Inclusive Dialogue And Interventions

The Majlis included preselected interventions from an Indigenous People’s representative, a youth leader, and a UN representative. These contributions enriched discussions by providing diverse perspectives on environmental conservation. An open Majlis round allowed all attendees to voice opinions, fostering a comprehensive dialogue on actionable strategies for nature-positive initiatives.

Moderated Interactive Discussion

Hajar Bakhit Alketbi, Director of the Government Communications Department at MOCCAE, moderated the Majlis. She guided the discussions, creating an interactive environment where participants could openly exchange ideas. The dialogue highlighted innovative examples of leadership and initiatives that can serve as blueprints for protecting nature and promoting sustainable ecosystems.

Dr. Amna Al Dahak concluded the Majlis by expressing gratitude for the collaborative spirit and rich exchange of ideas. She reiterated the UAE’s commitment to advancing partnerships and translating dialogue into concrete commitments. She invited attendees to the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 in Abu Dhabi, where discussions from the Majlis will continue to shape global conservation efforts.

Impact On IUCN Congress

The insights, connections, and commitments formed at the Nature Guardians Majlis will directly inform the priorities for the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025. The frameworks established during the event aim to drive significant global commitments, foster multilateral cooperation, and promote a nature-positive agenda focused on resilience, equity, and innovation.
