UAE Wins Fifth Term on IMO Maritime Council Under Category B

UAE Wins Fifth Term on IMO Maritime Council Under Category B

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The United Arab Emirates has achieved another major success in the global maritime sector by winning membership in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council under Category B for the fifth time in a row. This accomplishment shows the UAE’s strong international standing and its important role in shaping the future of maritime transport at both regional and global levels.

The victory is the result of years of work by the UAE to build a modern, advanced maritime sector. The country has developed strong laws, upgraded maritime services through digital systems, improved ship safety, and supported major global goals to reduce harmful emissions. These combined efforts have helped the UAE become a key player in improving the sustainability and efficiency of the global shipping industry.

The UAE’s election also reflects the global community’s growing trust in its maritime ecosystem. The country is home to world-class maritime infrastructure, advanced ports with high operational performance, modern logistics services, and a flexible regulatory environment. These strengths help support growth, innovation, and competitiveness in the global maritime market. Because of these capabilities, the UAE is recognized as one of the most reliable and influential countries in global maritime operations.

On this special occasion, Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, expressed deep pride and congratulated the UAE’s leadership. He said that the UAE’s success is the result of wise guidance and continuous support from the nation’s leaders, who aim to build a strong, modern maritime sector. This sector is now a major part of the national economy and an important contributor to global maritime trade.

Al Mazrouei explained that the UAE is now a leader in the maritime field due to its advanced laws and forward-thinking policies. These policies help improve the safety and sustainability of the seas and prepare the maritime sector for future challenges. He added that the UAE’s re-election to the IMO Council—again with one of the highest vote counts—is clear proof of the country’s respected global role and the confidence the world has in its ability to develop an effective and sustainable maritime system.

He noted that since joining the IMO in 1980, the UAE has actively participated in shaping global maritime laws. The UAE first won a seat on the IMO Council in 2017, and since then, it has contributed significantly to improving maritime safety, reducing carbon emissions, protecting the marine environment, and developing navigation policies. These efforts have helped push the global maritime industry toward better standards and stronger environmental protection.

The Minister also said that the renewal of the UAE’s membership brings new responsibilities. It allows the country to take greater leadership in forming future strategies for global maritime transport. The UAE plans to support modern technologies, encourage innovation, and work closely with international partners to build a maritime system that is safe, clean, strong, and ready to face climate-related challenges. These steps are essential to protecting global supply chains and ensuring stable maritime operations worldwide.

He concluded by reaffirming the UAE’s commitment to continued cooperation with international maritime organizations. The country will keep working to strengthen the competitiveness of the global maritime sector and support the transition toward systems that are more environmentally friendly, innovative, and capable of handling future demands.

Through this new term on the IMO Council, the UAE proves once again that it is a global leader in the maritime world and a strong supporter of international progress.
