On behalf of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State, represented the United Arab Emirates at the African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting (AUMYCM). The high-level summit was held in Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, and brought together numerous African heads of state and international delegates to strengthen cooperation and discuss key developmental agendas.

UAE’s Continued Commitment to African Nations

During his address, Sheikh Shakhboot reaffirmed the UAE’s unwavering commitment to building and deepening its strategic partnerships with African nations. He emphasized that the UAE values its long-standing relationship with the African continent and is determined to continue supporting the development of African countries through collaborative and impactful initiatives. His speech was a strong reflection of the UAE’s foreign policy approach, which promotes partnership, cooperation, and sustainable progress.

Key Areas of Focus in UAE-Africa Relations

Sheikh Shakhboot highlighted several important sectors where the UAE has been actively supporting African development. These sectors include healthcare, renewable energy, infrastructure development, education, overall development initiatives, and food security. By working together in these critical areas, the UAE aims to contribute meaningfully to Africa’s long-term growth while fostering self-reliant, resilient, and empowered communities across the continent.

MoU Signed Between UAE and African Union

A major highlight of the UAE’s participation in the summit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the African Union. This MoU focuses on establishing a strategic partnership in the field of healthcare. Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan and Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, signed the agreement during a formal ceremony attended by several African leaders and dignitaries. The signing marked a significant step in formalizing cooperation between the UAE and African countries in the healthcare sector.

Strategic Importance of the Health Partnership

The newly signed health MoU demonstrates the UAE’s sincere intention to support Africa’s public health efforts. It reaffirms President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s vision of promoting access to quality healthcare for all. The agreement aims to strengthen healthcare systems, improve accessibility to essential health services, and build capacity in African nations. The UAE is positioning itself not just as a development partner but as a long-term ally in Africa’s healthcare journey.

Sheikh Shakhboot’s Statement on the MoU

During the MoU signing ceremony, Sheikh Shakhboot stated that the agreement reflects the shared aspirations of both the UAE and the African Union to bring about meaningful and sustainable improvements in African communities. He added that the partnership lays a solid foundation for long-term cooperation in healthcare, and it aligns with the broader goals of ensuring health and well-being for all. His remarks highlighted the human and humanitarian focus of the UAE’s foreign aid and development policies.

Expanding Areas of Cooperation

In addition to healthcare, Sheikh Shakhboot noted that the UAE is equally dedicated to supporting Africa in other vital areas. These include climate action, food security, digital innovation, and youth empowerment. All these domains are key to the future of the African continent and resonate with the UAE’s commitment to sustainable global development. The Minister of State stressed that the UAE sees African Union member countries as important partners in shaping a resilient and forward-looking world.

Strengthening Multilateral Ties

The UAE’s involvement in the African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting is a clear reflection of its belief in multilateralism and international collaboration. Sheikh Shakhboot’s presence at the summit emphasized the importance the UAE places on maintaining open dialogue and active participation in global forums. It also highlighted the nation’s readiness to share its resources, experience, and knowledge for the common good.

Promoting Public Health in African Communities

The focus on healthcare in the UAE-Africa partnership is timely and essential. Many African countries face challenges in providing adequate healthcare to their populations, especially in remote and underserved areas. The UAE’s support under the MoU is expected to help improve healthcare delivery systems, train medical professionals, and facilitate the supply of essential medical equipment and services. These efforts are aimed at building a healthier and more secure future for African communities.

A Vision for Sustainable and Inclusive Growth

The UAE’s partnership with Africa goes beyond immediate assistance. It is part of a broader strategy to promote sustainable and inclusive development. By investing in renewable energy projects, supporting agricultural innovation, and contributing to education and infrastructure development, the UAE is helping to lay the foundation for long-term economic and social progress in Africa. These initiatives also align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Encouraging Innovation and Youth Engagement

Another important area of collaboration is digital innovation and youth empowerment. Africa is a continent with a young and growing population, and empowering this generation is key to its future. The UAE is working with African countries to provide training programs, promote technology adoption, and create opportunities for youth to contribute to their communities. These efforts are intended to help build a new generation of leaders, entrepreneurs, and change-makers across the continent.

A Long-Term Strategic Partnership

The health MoU and UAE’s active role in the AU summit show that the UAE is not looking for short-term engagement but is committed to building a long-lasting strategic partnership with Africa. This approach is based on mutual respect, shared goals, and the belief that cooperation can bring about real and measurable improvements in people’s lives. The UAE’s development model, which blends humanitarian aid with investment in capacity-building, is seen as a valuable framework for international cooperation.

UAE’s Global Development Vision

The UAE’s outreach to Africa is part of its broader vision to be a responsible and proactive member of the international community. Under the leadership of President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE has positioned itself as a nation that contributes constructively to global peace, stability, and development. By supporting Africa’s healthcare and development needs, the UAE continues to uphold these values on the international stage.

Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan’s participation in the African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting, and the signing of a health partnership agreement, highlight the UAE’s deepening ties with African nations. The initiatives discussed and agreements signed during the summit underline the UAE’s role as a committed development partner focused on public welfare, strategic cooperation, and sustainable growth. This partnership is set to grow in the coming years, driven by shared values, visionary leadership, and a desire to create lasting impact.
