The UAE's security agencies have wrapped up a significant probe into a clandestine operation aimed at smuggling military equipment to the Port Sudan Authority via UAE territory. Those arrested in connection with the operation are now set to face trial.
The investigation was initiated after the suspects were apprehended on April 30. Authorities discovered that the group was involved in the illegal trafficking of military gear and financial crimes, utilizing covert methods to broker deals and retrieve undeclared commissions through concealed channels.
Further investigations revealed that the suspects had been engaging in transactions with officials from the Sudanese military, including high-ranking officers, politicians, and businessmen. Additionally, connections were found with individuals and companies under US sanctions and those flagged by Interpol.
These transactions were reportedly initiated at the request of the Armament Committee of the Sudanese Armed Forces, led by Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and his deputy Yasser Al-Atta, with coordination overseen by Othman Al-Zubair, the financial manager of the Port Sudan Authority.
Officials highlighted that the investigation unveiled crucial insights into the funding sources for these military deals. A wealth of evidence, including audio-visual recordings, communications between the members of the cell, contracts, financial documents, and comprehensive statements detailing the operational procedures and fund transfer routes, were gathered. Reports from a technical committee indicated that a portion of the funding was funneled through a UAE-based bank.
The State Security Prosecution has confirmed that the accused will be brought to trial, in alignment with the UAE's pledge to uphold justice, transparency, and national security. Authorities emphasized that the prompt interception and investigation of this case underscore the UAE's determination against illegal arms transactions and financial malfeasance.
This situation highlights the UAE's staunch stance against illicit military trades, money laundering, and activities that could destabilize the region, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to maintaining law and order.
