A significant fire erupted at a power facility in the Moscow region of Russia on Sunday following an attack by Ukrainian drones, marking a critical escalation by Kyiv into Russian territory.
The event took place at the Shatura Power Plant, situated approximately 120 kilometers east of the capital. The strike resulted in a large blaze, leading to heating disruptions for numerous residents and billowing smoke visible across the night sky.
Incident Details
Local authorities reported that multiple Ukrainian drones targeted the facility early Sunday morning. While some were intercepted by air-defense systems, several managed to strike the site directly. This resulted in significant explosions and a fire affecting vital equipment.
Online videos depicted bright fireballs and heavy dark smoke emanating from the power station as loud detonations reverberated in the vicinity.
Regional Impact
The town of Shatura, which has a population of around 33,000, faced heating shortages as temperatures neared freezing. Officials activated contingency power systems and dispatched mobile heating units to assist local residents.
Reports indicated that three transformers ignited, causing substantial damage to the facility.
Wider Context of Conflict
This assault occurs in the fourth year of ongoing hostilities between Russia and Ukraine. Russia has escalated its attacks on Ukraine’s electricity and heating infrastructure, resulting in frequent blackouts and energy crisis in various Ukrainian cities.
In retaliation, Ukraine has targeted Russian oil facilities to undermine Moscow’s revenue from energy exports. While Ukraine has conducted operations near the border, this represents one of the first significant assaults on a power station that aids the broader Moscow area, which serves over 22 million residents.
Response from Russia
Russia's defense ministry reported that it intercepted 75 Ukrainian drones on Sunday, some near Moscow and many over the Black Sea. Flight activities at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport were temporarily halted as a safety measure.
Ukraine has yet to release an immediate statement regarding the attack.
About Shatura Power Plant
The Shatura facility is among the oldest power plants in Russia, established shortly after the Russian revolution. Initially, it used peat as its energy source before transitioning to alternative fuels in subsequent decades.
