The Tuapse oil refinery, located on Russia's Black Sea coast, has faced its third drone strike this month from Ukraine, resulting in a substantial fire and the evacuation of nearby residents, as reported by local authorities.
These ongoing assaults have already wreaked havoc, contributing to an oil spill in the sea and the emergence of “black rain” that has left a grim residue on streets and buildings alike.
More than 160 firefighters were mobilized to combat the flames following the latest incident. Krasnodar regional governor Veniamin Kondratyev noted that emergency crews were operating under “extremely challenging conditions,” stating that no casualties have been reported so far.
In response, local officials initiated an evacuation for residents in adjacent streets and established a temporary shelter at a school. Concerns were raised about serious air contamination, with authorities advising the populace to keep windows sealed, wear masks, and limit outdoor activities.
Anastasia Troyanova, an environmental journalist from the area, reported a significant cloud of black smoke engulfing the town, accompanied by a strong scent of burning oil.
In light of the incident, President Vladimir Putin has directed the emergencies minister to oversee the firefighting and cleanup efforts in Tuapse. The Kremlin has accused Ukraine of deliberately targeting oil export facilities, suggesting these assaults are destabilizing the global energy market.
Ukraine's military confirmed the attack, asserting that the refinery is integral to Russia's military operations, thus qualifying it as a legitimate target. Kyiv's objective is to diminish Russia's war-funding capabilities.
In recent months, Ukraine has intensified its assaults on Russian energy assets, which it claims are crucial for sustaining the war initiated in 2022.
In a related event, Ukrainian officials reported a separate drone strike by Russia in Kyiv, which resulted in injuries and multiple fires, including one at a cemetery.
