The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has estimated that direct damage to buildings in South Lebanon caused by Israeli attacks has reached approximately USD 1.38 billion, highlighting the extensive destruction suffered by communities in the region.
The estimate was based on a rapid building-level damage assessment conducted by the UNDP in cooperation with the Lebanese National Council for Scientific Research. The study aimed to provide an overview of the physical impact of the conflict and assess the scale of destruction affecting residential structures across southern Lebanon.

According to the findings, a total of 11,095 buildings were completely destroyed, affecting 17,891 housing units. In addition, 2,242 buildings sustained partial damage, impacting 5,219 housing units, while another 9,311 structures suffered minor damage, affecting 18,282 housing units. The figures underscore the significant challenges facing thousands of residents whose homes have been damaged or destroyed.
The assessment offers one of the most detailed snapshots so far of the damage inflicted on the region's built environment. However, the UNDP noted that the figures represent only direct damage to buildings and do not include underground structures or critical infrastructure such as roads, bridges, electricity networks, water facilities, and telecommunications systems. As a result, the overall economic impact is expected to be considerably higher.
To carry out the study, experts employed a Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI) workflow combined with office-based visual validation techniques. High-resolution satellite images taken on April 29, 2026, were compared with baseline imagery captured on October 23, 2025, enabling analysts to identify and classify damaged structures across the affected areas.
The UNDP emphasized that the assessment did not include ground verification exercises, meaning that the results were derived primarily from satellite-based observations and remote analysis. Nevertheless, the methodology provides a reliable overview of the scale and distribution of destruction across South Lebanon.
The findings come as Lebanon continues to face mounting humanitarian and economic challenges linked to the ongoing conflict. Damage to residential areas has displaced thousands of families and increased pressure on relief and recovery efforts. Rebuilding homes and restoring essential services are expected to require substantial resources and long-term planning.
International organizations and Lebanese authorities are likely to rely on such assessments to guide reconstruction priorities and coordinate humanitarian assistance. Detailed damage evaluations are considered essential for mobilizing support and developing strategies aimed at restoring affected communities.
As efforts to address the consequences of the conflict continue, the latest UNDP report highlights the scale of reconstruction that lies ahead and the importance of sustained international cooperation to support recovery and stability in South Lebanon.
