More than 2.9 million children and youths in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are caught in increasing danger as the Ebola outbreak escalates, according to a recent alert from UNICEF.
The UN children's agency confirmed that the global tally of Ebola cases has reached 1,000, with approximately 2.95 million young individuals under 18 residing in 31 impacted health zones. These children face not only the health threat from the virus but also the disruption of vital services including healthcare, education, and nutrition.
As of June 19, children and adolescents represent around 15% of confirmed Ebola cases and more than 25% of deaths recorded in eastern DRC.
For young patients diagnosed with Ebola, the mortality rate is nearly double that of adults. Experts note that malnutrition and delays in diagnosis exacerbate risks for children, given that the early symptoms of Ebola often mimic those of malaria and other common illnesses.
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell emphasized that children are struggling to comprehend the ongoing crisis, whilst being further exposed to rumors and misleading information online.
The outbreak is primarily centered in Ituri Province, with notable cases in the Mongbwalu, Rwampara, and Bunia health zones. There have also been instances reported in the North Kivu and South Kivu regions.
The humanitarian toll has been heavy; UNICEF indicates that at least 135 children have become orphans due to the outbreak in Ituri, receiving psychosocial support and alternative care.
Efforts to open the first nursery for infants who have been separated from their parents during treatment for Ebola are underway, with two more facilities anticipated in the weeks to come.
Even before the outbreak, children in eastern DRC faced severe vulnerabilities due to chronic malnutrition, inadequate vaccination coverage, prolonged armed conflict, and widespread displacements.
In Ituri, over half of children under five years exhibit signs of chronic malnutrition, with more than 20% never having received the first dose of essential vaccines.
UNICEF warns that infectious disease outbreaks tend to amplify risks of violence, exploitation, and emotional distress, particularly for women and girls who are especially prone to sexual violence during crises.
The disruption to healthcare services, nutrition programs, and educational resources could exacerbate the already dire conditions for those affected.
The outbreak is not limited to DRC; Uganda has confirmed 20 Ebola cases, including two fatalities, among individuals who traveled from DRC for medical assistance.
One child in Uganda has tested positive for the virus, and 19 more are currently under observation and isolation.
UNICEF, the World Health Organization, and Africa CDC are collaborating with authorities in both countries to implement contact tracing, infection prevention measures, safe burials, and public awareness initiatives.
UNICEF seeks $70.7 million for a six-month emergency response but faces a $20 million funding gap.
The agency also stresses the need for immediate and continuous humanitarian access to affected regions, citing ongoing insecurity and mobility restrictions that hinder containment and tracing efforts.
As health organizations strive to curb the outbreak, prioritizing the protection of children while maintaining critical services remains essential. Continued international aid is expected to expand, as access to vulnerable populations plays a key role in effectively managing the Ebola situation in the coming months.
There are currently 1,000 confirmed cases of Ebola worldwide.
UNICEF estimates nearly 2.95 million children and adolescents are at risk due to the outbreak.
The outbreak remains most acute in Ituri Province, including the Mongbwalu, Rwampara, and Bunia health zones.
At least 135 children in Ituri have lost one or both parents due to the outbreak and are receiving assistance.
Yes, Uganda has reported 20 confirmed cases and two associated deaths among travelers from DRC.
UNICEF and partners are intensifying efforts to contain the outbreak, protect vulnerable children, and secure further funding as the response moves into a critical phase.
