During the Saudi International Handicrafts Week “Banan,” many skilled artisans were on display; however, none drew quite as much attention as Hamad Aljuhani. His intricate hand embroidery simulating human portraits has left visitors in awe. Combining meticulous craftsmanship with contemporary flair, Aljuhani’s works distinguish themselves amid an array of exhibits, showcasing how traditional techniques can resonate with modern aesthetics.
Starting his embroidery journey seriously in 2020, Aljuhani initially practiced with traditional needles, honing various stitching styles. Eventually, he gravitated towards portrait embroidery, keen on capturing the nuanced depth of human emotions and expressions through thread. Each stitch serves to depict strength and individuality, making the artform a powerful means of personal expression for him.
As he honed his skills, Aljuhani sought to elevate his craft further. He embraced the punch needle technique, which allowed him to fashion larger pieces faster without sacrificing quality. This innovation not only facilitated greater production but also enabled him to satisfy increasing demand, transforming his artistry into a viable business endeavor. Today, he artfully blends traditional methods with modern techniques to produce stunning pieces.
Much of Aljuhani’s inspiration stems from his mother, a seasoned embroiderer with over three decades of experience. Observing her dedication deeply influenced his own artistic journey. He considers the continuation of embroidery a tribute to her legacy, ensuring that each creation feels deeply personal and linked to his family’s artistic heritage.
Aljuhani’s ability to meld historical craftsmanship with contemporary concepts has resonated with many. His portraits aren’t merely sketched outlines; they burst with depth, character, and texture. The precision behind every stitch exemplifies his passion for the craft. Participating in events like Handicrafts Week, he aims to inspire others to explore embroidery and keep traditional Saudi craftsmanship thriving.
What began as a simple passion has transformed into a flourishing career for Aljuhani. His handmade works possess both artistic beauty and commercial appeal. Looking ahead, he aims to refine his techniques, broaden his brand, and showcase the allure of embroidery to a wider audience. He believes that handcrafted art holds a cherished position in society, embodying patience, skill, and cultural richness—a perfect synthesis of heritage and modern innovation.
