Gary Walters Reflects on His Remarkable 37 Years at the White House

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Gary Walters dedicated 37 years to the White House, experiencing a world few have access to. Beginning as a young officer assigned to safeguard the president and culminating as the longest-serving chief usher in history, he was the steady presence during pivotal and emotional moments throughout the nation’s history. His recently released book, “White House Memories 1970-2007,” encapsulates these experiences with honesty and depth.

While the role of chief usher is often understated, it encompasses one of the most challenging responsibilities within this iconic residence. Walters oversaw operations that ensured the White House functioned seamlessly, including maintenance, renovations, and the management of nearly 100 staff members ranging from butlers to engineers. His straightforward goal was to ensure the president and first lady were free from concerns about their home—the epicenter of American governance. “We served the presidency,” he often remarked.

Walters began his journey with Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, later joining the Usher’s Office in 1976. After being promoted to chief usher in 1986, he aided Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. His role remained unchanging amid political and social upheaval, as he emphasized, “politics had nothing to do with it.” His allegiance was to the institution rather than the individuals within it.

One of the most harrowing experiences of his career unfolded on September 11, 2001. On that day, the White House staff had set up the South Lawn for the annual Congressional Picnic. As the terrorist attacks began to unfold, while most staff members evacuated, Walters and a few others stayed determinedly at their posts. Understanding the urgency of President George W. Bush’s return, they manually cleared tables to prepare for his arrival.

In the midst of chaos, Walters witnessed smoke rising from the Pentagon after it was struck, and fears escalated with reports of a fourth plane still unaccounted for, possibly targeting the White House. Remarkably, due to the brave actions of passengers, that plane was forced down in Pennsylvania. Walters recalls that day as the most terrifying moment he faced during his tenure.

Yet, not all memories are steeped in trepidation; many highlight acts of kindness. For example, Maureen Reagan’s visits to children’s hospitals included the distribution of teddy bears. When a shipment arrived late, Walters saved the boxes. Years later, on President George H.W. Bush's Inauguration Day, he brought joy to idle grandchildren by placing these bears on their beds.

Other anecdotes illustrate the rapidity with which emergencies can arise in the meticulously managed environment of the White House. During one official dinner under the Reagan administration, Walters detected smoke emanating from the Yellow Oval Room, where a butler had mistakenly attempted to create ambiance by lighting a closed flue. Walters and his team acted swiftly to avert disaster, ensuring the Reagans remained blissfully unaware.

These narratives underscore why Gary Walters is held in such high esteem among his colleagues. He not only managed one of the most significant residences in the nation but also acted as a protector of its traditions and dignity. His lengthy service embodies the quiet dedication required to uphold stability at the heart of American leadership.

Walters retired in 2007, concluding a notable chapter filled with presidents, challenges, celebrations, and historical milestones. His legacy represents unwavering loyalty, steady leadership, and immense responsibility—all qualities that made him an indelible figure within the White House. Through his reflections, readers gain a rare glimpse into life within America's most storied residence, through the eyes of someone who has lived it intimately.
