Massive Flight Disruptions Sweep US: Over 2,800 Cancellations and 10,000 Delays

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

The airline industry in the United States is grappling with its most significant disruptions in years, as more than 2,800 flights have been cancelled and over 10,000 delayed amid the ongoing federal government shutdown affecting aviation.

On Sunday, November 9, the tally of cancellations and delays has reached its peak for the third consecutive day, following government-mandated flight reductions issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in light of a shortage of air traffic controllers. With the shutdown now the longest in history at 40 days, many federal aviation employees remain unpaid, forcing airlines to reduce operations to ensure flight safety.

Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy cautioned that conditions could deteriorate as Thanksgiving approaches, traditionally one of the busiest travel times in the country, when millions of Americans take to the skies, exacerbating staffing issues.

In a move to address the crisis, the FAA mandated airlines to decrease their daily flights by 4% at 40 major airports starting Friday, with this cut potentially escalating to 6% on Tuesday and 10% by November 14. Prominent airlines including United, Delta, American, and Alaska Airlines have appealed to Congress to expedite legislation to resolve the shutdown and mitigate further disruptions.

The US Senate responded by voting to move forward with a bill intended to end the shutdown, leading to an uptick in airline stock prices during pre-market trading. Shares of United Airlines surged by 1.9%, while Delta and American Airlines saw increases of 1.4% each, with Alaska Air rising by 1%.

American Airlines raised alarms about the urgency of the situation, stressing the impact on customers due to the financial strain faced by federal workers and widespread cancellations. “Our customers have endured thousands of delays and cancellations, and federal aviation employees deserve to be compensated,” the airline commented.

As the shutdown continues, travelers should monitor flight statuses closely and prepare for potential delays, especially during peak travel periods around the holiday.
