The United States has authorized a groundbreaking arms deal totaling $11.1 billion for Taiwan, marking one of the largest military support packages for the self-ruled island. This move underscores Washington's commitment to bolstering Taiwan's defense in response to escalating regional tensions.
The comprehensive package encompasses cutting-edge military hardware aimed at boosting Taiwan’s deterrent and defensive powers. Notable components include 82 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and 420 Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), valued at over $4 billion. These systems are intended to enhance long-range offensive capabilities and defense against aerial incursions.
Also featured are 60 self-propelled howitzer artillery systems and related equipment, worth more than $4 billion, alongside drones valued at upwards of $1 billion. Additional elements of the agreement comprise military software exceeding $1 billion, Javelin and TOW anti-tank missiles priced over $700 million, helicopter spare parts amounting to $96 million, and refurbishment kits for Harpoon missiles at $91 million.
Officials indicated that these arms sales are essential for the modernization of Taiwan's military and vital for maintaining a credible defensive stance. The package is designed to reinforce deterrence and promote stability across the Indo-Pacific region.
Taiwan expressed appreciation for the approval, viewing it as a crucial advancement in strengthening its self-defense capabilities. Leaders emphasized the significance of defense reforms and fostering wider societal resilience to assure long-term security.
China reacted sharply to the announcement, reiterating its strong opposition to any military collaboration concerning Taiwan. Beijing argues that Taiwan is part of its territory and cautioned that such actions could heighten regional instability.
This approval coincides with Taiwan’s recent declaration of a $40 billion supplementary defense budget covering the years 2026 to 2033, reinforcing its commitment to national defense.
The deal is anticipated to exacerbate tensions between the United States and China, with Taiwan remaining a focal point in the intensifying geopolitical rivalry in the region.
