US Greenlights Sale of F-35 Jets to Saudi Arabia Despite Technology Worries

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

The United States has made a pivotal decision to consent to the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, a key advancement in the defense collaboration between Washington and Riyadh. President Donald Trump confirmed this decision during a press interaction at the White House, lauding Saudi Arabia as a “great ally.” This initiative is framed as a significant diplomatic overture, especially with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman scheduled to visit the US soon.

Insiders indicate that Saudi Arabia has long pursued the F-35 aircraft, which is lauded as one of the most sophisticated stealth jets globally. Each jet is estimated to cost around $100 million. Nonetheless, the sale is still in preliminary discussions and may encounter various complications similar to past arms talks in the region.

Details of the Announcement

The information was unveiled during a press session at the White House, where President Trump reiterated the US's intent to export F-35 jets to Saudi Arabia. This dialogue reflects a broader diplomatic strategy aimed at reinforcing bonds between the two nations and potentially motivating Riyadh toward fostering relations with Israel.

Initial Statements and Global Observations

Trump's comments signify preliminary approval rather than a full-fledged agreement, as necessary steps remain, including congressional sanction, Pentagon evaluations, and negotiations with Lockheed Martin, the manufacturer of the jets.

The proposed sale has incited apprehensions among several stakeholders:

  • Officials in Israel have voiced concerns due to Israel's unique position as the sole Middle Eastern nation operating the F-35, stressing the importance of maintaining a “qualitative military edge” as mandated by US law.

  • A Pentagon analysis raised issues about the risk of China acquiring sensitive technology through Saudi Arabia, given the existing defense and technology collaborations between Beijing and Riyadh.

Foreign policy analysts caution that the transfer of such critical technology could pose long-standing threats to US strategic interests in the area.

Comparison with Past F-35 Transactions

A previous instance involving the UAE highlights the challenges that may lie ahead. The UAE had been cleared to acquire up to 50 F-35 jets during Trump’s prior administration, but the sale was obstructed due to US apprehensions surrounding Chinese technologies in the UAE's telecommunications sector, particularly involving Huawei. Those discussions reached a standstill with the change of administration to Biden.

Experts believe similar issues regarding technology security might resurface during the Saudi procurement negotiation.

Future Steps

To advance the sale, the following steps must occur:

  1. Saudi Arabia needs to submit a formal acquisition request for the jets.

  2. Congress must endorse the transfer, taking into account regional military dynamics.

  3. The Pentagon must generate a Letter of Offer and Acceptance.

  4. Saudi Arabia and Lockheed Martin will then need to engage in discussions regarding technical, financial, and delivery aspects.

Even with approval, actual delivery may extend over several years due to existing production timetables and competing international requests. Lockheed Martin currently has over 1,100 jets on the order list from various global clients.

Geoeconomics experts suggest that this agreement could fortify Saudi-US relations and bolster Riyadh’s broader strategic objectives. Analysts highlight that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman aims for advanced defense partnerships, technology collaboration, and backing for Saudi Arabia’s expanding nuclear initiatives.

While the nation may not secure all its desired commitments, experts believe the US's action positions Saudi Arabia for deeper involvement in defense, technology, and regional diplomacy.
