This weekend, air travel across the United States was thrown into disarray, with more than 1,700 flights canceled and countless delays resulting from a significant staffing crisis linked to the current US government shutdown.
Flight-tracking reports show that Saturday alone saw over 1,500 grounded flights alongside more than 6,600 delays, with Sunday adding another 1,000 cancellations. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has attributed this turmoil to staffing shortages as air traffic controllers and federal security screeners go unpaid during the ongoing budget stalemate.
The disruptions have hit the country's busiest airports particularly hard, with New York's John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty airports reporting delays stretching into hours. Newark faced arrival delays surpassing four hours, while LaGuardia saw departures held up for more than an hour.
At Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, arrivals were pushed back by almost five and a half hours, and Washington, D.C.'s Reagan National Airport reported nearly 80 cancellations with half of all arrivals delayed. Similar disruptions were noted at major airports in Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix, and Seattle.
The ripple effects reached international destinations too, with cancellations at Amsterdam's Schiphol, Toronto Pearson, and Tokyo Haneda airports climbing into double digits.
The FAA recently instructed airlines to cut domestic flights by 4% at 40 key airports to maintain safety protocols, but these measures haven't mitigated the wave of delays. If the budget deadlock persists, officials are considering increasing this reduction to 6% by Tuesday, potentially escalating to 10% by next Friday.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy cautioned that cancellations could rise further to 15-20% if Congress does not resolve the shutdown swiftly. Former FAA Deputy Administrator Dan Elwell has described the current scenario as “uncharted territory”, warning that the situation might escalate further, risking upcoming holiday travel plans.
The ongoing crises emphasize the crucial links between federal operations and aviation safety, highlighting how a lengthy political stalemate can hinder not just air travel, but also an entire nation's mobility.
