US Military Action Escalates Tensions with Iran in Hormuz

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a significant escalation, US forces disabled two Iranian oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz following intense overnight confrontations with Iranian military vessels, intensifying regional tensions amid a fragile ceasefire.

The US military reported that the Iranian tankers were attempting to circumvent an American blockade on Iranian ports when strikes were carried out on Friday. Footage published by the US military captured fighter jets targeting the smokestacks of the tankers. Earlier this week, another Iranian tanker sustained damage when a US aircraft struck its rudder.

These incidents unfolded after Iran allegedly launched attacks against three US Navy ships patrolling the Strait of Hormuz. The Pentagon confirmed that American forces managed to shield the ships and subsequently targeted Iranian military installations nearby, with no US losses reported during the operation.

Meanwhile, the UAE confirmed it endured another Iranian missile and drone assault, with the Defence Ministry stating its air defence systems intercepted two ballistic missiles and three drones. Three individuals were injured without official clarification on whether all threats were neutralized.

The recent violence casts a shadow over the delicate ceasefire, which has persisted for nearly a month. The United States is reportedly awaiting Iran's reaction to a fresh proposal aimed at resolving the conflict, reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz, and regulating Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed hope for a "serious offer" from Iran soon but cautioned that attacks on US forces would provoke a decisive military response.

Iran has denounced the US military actions as a breach of the ceasefire, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accusing the US of prioritizing military confrontation over diplomatic solutions.

Since hostilities began on February 28, following US and Israeli military actions, Iran has increasingly limited traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial oil shipping route; disruptions here have caused significant spikes in global fuel prices and heightened market volatility.

A cargo ship was reported to have caught fire during the recent strikes, with Iranian media indicating one sailor's death and ten injuries. It remains uncertain if the vessel was among the two tankers subjected to US strikes.

Additionally, satellite analyses have revealed a large oil spill near Iran's Kharg Island oil terminal, with experts estimating around 80,000 barrels may have seeped into Gulf waters. While the exact cause is still under investigation, analysts suggest military operations in the area could be responsible.

Environmental experts caution that the spill could advance towards the UAE, Qatar, and Saudi coastlines if conditions deteriorate, though some believe it may dilute offshore before reaching any land.

President Donald Trump has maintained that the ceasefire is still in effect while warning Iran of extensive bombing if negotiations fail to yield results.

In a bid to defuse tensions, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif revealed that his administration has been engaging with both Washington and Tehran.

The escalating situation has implications for global shipping, as numerous commercial vessels remain stranded in the Persian Gulf amidst Iran's reported attempts to exert authority over the Strait of Hormuz traffic. Security concerns regarding oil and trade routes in the region are growing.
