The US stock market closed in the red on Thursday following erratic trading, as investors reacted to inconclusive corporate earnings and increasing fears regarding artificial intelligence (AI) affecting the software industry, according to Reuters.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased by 179.71 points, approximately 0.36%, finishing at 49,310.32. The S&P 500 also saw a drop, losing 29.50 points or 0.41%, settling at 7,108.40, while the Nasdaq Composite fell by 219.06 points, a 0.89% decline, ending at 24,438.50.
Investor sentiment remained tenuous as market participants analyzed earnings reports reflecting inconsistent performance across various sectors. Heightened concerns about the rapid evolution of AI potentially disrupting traditional software companies particularly pressured stock within the tech sector.
Trading volume was slightly subdued, with US exchanges realizing a total of 17.41 billion shares traded, in contrast to the 20-day average of 18.33 billion shares.
The market exhibited a cautious approach among investors, with technology stocks notably leading the downturn against a backdrop of uncertainties surrounding AI’s influence on the industry.
