US Military Operations Near Venezuela Result in Eight Fatalities

Post by : Meena Hassan

The US has confirmed eight fatalities following its latest military actions targeting vessels in the eastern Pacific Ocean, escalating tensions shortly after the seizure of a Venezuelan oil tanker. This incident is part of an ongoing increase in US military operations throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

Official reports indicate that three vessels were struck in international waters on Monday as part of “lethal kinetic strikes,” sanctioned by US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. According to military sources, three individuals died on the first vessel, two on the second, and three on the third, with claims linking the deceased to drug trafficking. However, no corroborating evidence has been presented.

These recent actions have sparked renewed international debate about the legality of US military interventions in the area. Since September, similar strikes have reportedly killed at least 90 individuals involved in maritime activities near Venezuela, raising alarms among international law experts and human rights organizations, who view these actions as potentially extrajudicial killings in zones not recognized as war areas.

Back at home, these strikes have prompted political pushback, with some lawmakers pressing Defense Secretary Hegseth regarding his role in sanctioning past incidents. There is particular concern over a September strike that allegedly targeted two individuals who survived an earlier attack and were seen struggling in the water.

Despite this backlash, the Pentagon has not slowed its military buildup near Venezuela. US naval forces, submarines, surveillance drones, and fighter jets are increasingly present in Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico waters, with officials claiming their goal is to disrupt regional drug trafficking.

Venezuelan authorities vehemently contest this narrative, accusing the US of masking geopolitical ambitions under the guise of counter-narcotics efforts. They argue that Washington's true intention is to seize control of Venezuela's significant oil and gas reserves, especially after the seizure of an oil tanker last week. Following this, US President Donald Trump remarked, “I assume we’re going to keep the oil,” a statement that has further heightened tensions.

The situation is becoming increasingly complex, with regional dynamics shifting as Trinidad and Tobago has agreed to allow US military planes to use its airports for logistical support in the following weeks. This Caribbean nation is located a mere 12 kilometers from Venezuela, further intensifying the atmosphere.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has defended this cooperation with the US, asserting her commitment to combating drug trafficking and stating her preference for harsh measures against traffickers.

In retaliation to the intensifying circumstances, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has declared an end to gas supplies to Trinidad and Tobago. This decision, reported by state media, underscores the deteriorating diplomatic and economic ties amidst heightened military actions in the region.

The ongoing developments illustrate heightened instability in the Caribbean and northern South America, with increasing anxieties surrounding sovereignty, international legal standards, and the potential fallout from escalated military activities in strategic maritime routes.
