US Pushes for UN Endorsement of Trump's Gaza Peace Proposal

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

The United States is ramping up its diplomatic efforts at the United Nations, urging the Security Council to unify behind a new draft resolution designed to promote President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace initiative. This appeal is particularly critical as officials caution that any hesitation or discord within the Council could have severe implications for Palestinians in Gaza.

In a statement, the US mission to the UN highlighted the immediate need to finalize the resolution, noting, “Attempts to create division now—during active negotiations on this resolution—can have grave, tangible, and entirely avoidable impacts for Palestinians in Gaza.” Officials have pointed out that the current ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is tenuous, underscoring the need for global cooperation to establish lasting peace.

Draft Resolution Introduces New Transitional Governance

Last week, US diplomats initiated formal discussions with Council members on the draft, which aims to build upon the recently established ceasefire regarding the two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas. A third iteration of the resolution—distributed among members on Thursday—proposes creating a Board of Peace, a governing body for Gaza with authority extending through 2027, theoretically led by Trump.

The framework also includes plans for setting up a temporary International Stabilization Force (ISF) composed of member states. This multinational entity would collaborate with Israel, Egypt, and newly trained Palestinian police forces to secure border regions, aid in demilitarization, and protect humanitarian access in Gaza.

First Mention of Palestinian Statehood in the Draft

In a significant change from prior drafts, this version includes references to a possible Palestinian state. The document states that once the Palestinian Authority implements critical reforms and reconstruction efforts in Gaza proceed, “the conditions may finally be suitable for a credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination and statehood.”

The draft further proposes that the United States initiate discussions between Israeli and Palestinian leaders to establish a “political horizon” for peaceful coexistence.

Support Builds, Yet Challenges Persist

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed optimism about the resolution’s prospects, informing reporters that progress on the text has been “good” and that Council action may be forthcoming.

However, diplomats involved in the talks indicate that several aspects still require clarification. Concerns highlighted by member states include:

  • The lack of a transparent mechanism for UN oversight of the Board of Peace

  • Scarce details on the involvement of the Palestinian Authority

  • The parameters and guidelines governing the proposed International Stabilization Force

Despite these unresolved issues, many members of the Council seem generally supportive of the fundamental framework, particularly its aim of stabilizing Gaza and averting a resumption of conflict.

As discussions progress, the US insists that prompt action is crucial to safeguard civilians and uphold the region’s precarious ceasefire. The next few days will be vital in determining if the Security Council can achieve consensus on Trump’s Gaza peace plan—one of the most ambitious diplomatic efforts currently on the global agenda.
