New U.S. Tariffs Complicate Holiday Gifts for Canadians

New U.S. Tariffs Complicate Holiday Gifts for Canadians

Post by : Meena Hassan

This holiday season, shipping gifts from Canada to the U.S. has become increasingly arduous due to new U.S. tariffs affecting even small packages. The previously available duty-free “de minimis” exemption for low-value shipments has been eliminated, presenting additional obstacles for Canadians wanting to send presents to friends and family across the border.

Under the former policy, packages valued under US$800 entered the U.S. without incurring duties. However, in light of recent changes, almost all parcels are subject to potential duties. Gifts priced under US$100 will now likely need tariff assessments, necessitating extra planning to ensure timely delivery.

Canada Post has communicated that proof of duty payment is mandatory for U.S.-bound shipments now. Typically, this involves using online payment platforms to prepay duties, generating a declaration ID and QR code. Shippers must have this proof when visiting the post office, ensuring adherence to U.S. customs regulations. This requirement is critical in preventing package delays or returns.

The new regulations significantly impact Canadians sending gifts sourced from countries like China, as these goods need formal customs entries now. Additionally, certain products, including food items, may face total restrictions, further complicating the holiday shopping experience.

Many Canadians are finding that traditional courier services have ceased shipping small packages to the U.S., leaving few reliable options like FedEx and DHL. Even with these carriers, engaging a customs broker is often necessary for shipment clearance. Consequently, sending what was once a straightforward gift has evolved into a process requiring meticulous planning and added expenses.

Small businesses, which depend on cross-border shipping to cater to U.S. customers, are also feeling these tariff impacts. While the extra steps encountered by individuals may seem cumbersome, they are crucial for ensuring that gifts arrive safely and on schedule.

Canadians sending gifts to the U.S. this holiday season should prepare well in advance, utilize approved prepayment applications, and familiarize themselves with new customs rules. Early preparation will aid shippers in navigating the added complexities, ensuring their gifts reach their loved ones without unexpected issues.
