Vancouver Detains Air India Pilot for Alcohol-Related Delay

Vancouver Detains Air India Pilot for Alcohol-Related Delay

Post by : Meena Hassan

On December 23, just ahead of Christmas, an Air India pilot was detained at Vancouver International Airport, Canada, after concerns were raised regarding his ability to perform duties due to the scent of alcohol. The pilot was slated to command a flight to Delhi, but this incident resulted in a delay for the scheduled departure.

Reports indicate that a duty-free store employee noticed the pilot either consuming alcohol or emanating a strong odor of it while he was making a purchase. This prompted them to notify Canadian airport authorities, who promptly responded.

The pilot underwent a breathalyzer test, which he did not pass. Consequently, he was detained by Canadian officials for further questioning. The last-minute nature of this incident forced Air India to remove the pilot from the flight and appoint an alternative crew member for the Delhi-bound service, leading to the delay.

Air India released a statement explaining, “Flight AI186 from Vancouver to Delhi on December 23 faced an unexpected delay due to the offloading of one cockpit crew member before the flight's departure. Concerns regarding the pilot's fitness for duty were raised by Canadian authorities, and as a precaution, an alternate pilot was designated for the flight, resulting in delay.”

The airline expressed apologies for the inconvenience to passengers and confirmed its full cooperation with local authorities during the ongoing investigation. “The pilot has been grounded while this inquiry unfolds. Air India adheres to a strict zero-tolerance policy concerning rule violations. Any confirmed breaches will incur serious disciplinary measures in accordance with our policies. Our unwavering priority remains passenger safety,” the airline emphasized in its statement.

In a related incident, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued a show-cause notice to another Air India cockpit crew for operating several flights between Delhi and Tokyo despite known serious compliance violations. The aviation authority has requested explanations from the pilots within a two-week timeframe.

These occurrences have prompted heightened scrutiny regarding crew compliance and safety measures across the airline sector. Authorities and airline management continue to emphasize the necessity of strict adherence to safety regulations to guarantee passenger safety and uphold operational integrity.
