Venezuela Claims US is Staging a War Amid Naval Deployment

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela has accused the United States of “staging a war” as it intensifies its military activities in the Caribbean. This escalated presence includes an aircraft carrier strike group, eight US Navy vessels, and 10 F-35 stealth fighters, all part of a campaign aimed at addressing drug-trafficking syndicates in Latin America.

In statements to state-run media, Maduro criticized the US military's buildup, asserting that it represents an effort to provoke conflict in the area. “They're fabricating a new, endless conflict; they promised not to engage in another war, yet here they are trying to create one that we will prevent,” he asserted.

This military initiative, instigated by President Donald Trump in September, has reportedly led to airstrikes on over 10 vessels, resulting in the deaths of more than 40 individuals, many identified as civilians, including fishermen, raising humanitarian concerns about the operation.

The Pentagon has defended the military presence as a necessary action against “narco-terrorists” in the region. As a part of the initiative, the US announced collaborative drills with Trinidad and Tobago, with the USS Gravely destroyer set to arrive in Port of Spain from October 26 to 30. US Marines are scheduled to partake in training exercises with the Trinidad and Tobago Defense Force near Venezuela's coast.

This military escalation underlines the mounting tensions between Venezuela and the US, as Maduro views the military campaign as a threatening maneuver to destabilize the region. Analysts caution that such a military surge, together with ongoing strikes, may escalate conflict in Latin America and worsen the humanitarian conditions along the coast.

The military campaign endorsed by Trump aims at disrupting drug-trafficking networks, but it has drawn international backlash for its impact on civilians and concerns regarding overreach in this already volatile area.
