Venezuela Claims 100 Lives Lost in U.S. Military Action

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

The Venezuelan government has declared that a total of 100 lives were lost during a recent U.S. military operation that deposed President Nicolás Maduro. This announcement by interior minister Diosdado Cabello came late Wednesday, representing the first official casualty report from the raid.

The military operation took place early Saturday in Caracas, where U.S. forces aimed to capture Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, both of whom sustained injuries during the event, with Flores reportedly suffering a head injury while Maduro incurred a leg injury.

Although the Venezuelan army had previously identified 23 soldiers who died, the full casualty count was not disclosed until this latest statement. Officials in Venezuela contended that many of the deceased were part of Maduro's security detail and labeled their deaths as being executed “in cold blood” by U.S. forces. They also alleged that Cuban military advisors stationed in Venezuela were among those killed.

In light of this tragedy, interim President Delcy Rodríguez announced a week of mourning to pay tribute to those who lost their lives during the raid, commending the military personnel who perished defending the nation.

While the U.S. has not released its own specific casualty figures for the raid, various other reports indicate differing numbers. Some estimates suggest fewer fatalities, approximating around 75 casualties which include both security personnel and civilians. However, the Venezuelan government continues to assert that 100 individuals died.

The raid has sparked significant global outrage, with Venezuelan authorities vehemently condemning the U.S. intervention as a breach of their sovereignty and a violation of international law. Other nations and global leaders have also expressed concerns regarding the implications of military force on regional stability.

The situation remains fluid, as Venezuela copes with deep divisions following this U.S. operation. The death toll and subsequent political ramifications are expected to influence the nation’s trajectory for the foreseeable future, intensifying discussions about foreign policy, security, and international standards.
