Venezuela Faces State of Emergency Following Twin Earthquakes

Post by : Shakul

Venezuela is reeling from one of its most catastrophic natural disasters as two significant earthquakes struck the nation within a brief 39-second interval on Wednesday night. The initial quake, recorded at 7.2 magnitude at 10:04 PM GMT, had its epicenter approximately 21 kilometers from Morón. Before the dust could settle, a more powerful tremor, measuring 7.5 magnitude, hit around 45 kilometers away just moments later. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) identified the first event as a foreshock and the latter as the main shock.

Aftershocks and Damage Assessment

The USGS reports that the 7.2 quake struck at a depth of 21.9 kilometers, while the 7.5 quake occurred at a shallower 10 kilometers, intensifying the effects felt throughout central and northern Venezuela. Over 20 aftershocks followed, prompting many residents to remain outdoors due to fears of further seismic events.

Panic in Caracas as Buildings Collapse

Caracas felt the most severe impact, with numerous buildings—both residential and commercial—showing critical structural damage. Walls crumbled, staircases fell, and many structures were left in ruins. Rescue crews rushed to search through the wreckage, facing a frantic crowd fleeing to open spaces. Emergency responders managed to save 18 individuals from one collapsed site, though others remain trapped.

Online videos depicted the chaos, showcasing people sprinting through shaky airport terminals and damaged streets engulfed in dust. In a touching moment, a resident was filmed carrying two dogs to safety from a damaged structure.

Airport and Education Facilities Affected

The powerful quakes adversely affected Simon Bolivar International Airport, Venezuela's primary international hub, causing a terminal roof section to collapse and halting all airport operations pending safety checks. Schools have been ordered to remain closed for several days while evaluations are conducted.

Interim President Delcy Rodriguez called for a national state of emergency, advising citizens to remain calm and commanding all medical personnel to immediately report to healthcare facilities to assist the injured.

Increasing Casualty Count

Initial reports from authorities confirmed at least three fatalities in Caracas soon after the quakes. In Falcon State, 32 individuals were hospitalized, while rescue teams are still trying to locate about 15 people believed to be trapped under collapsed buildings.

The USGS alerts that the final casualty numbers might escalate as the rescue efforts proceed. Considering the quakes’ magnitude, depth, and affected population, the agency estimates potential fatalities could range from 10,000 to 100,000, although official numbers are currently lower and still being updated.

Rescue Efforts Underway

Emergency response teams, including firefighters, military, and medical personnel, have been deployed to the impacted areas. They continue to search through ruins as authorities assess the condition of roads, bridges, and public infrastructure.

Some municipalities have set up temporary shelters for displaced residents, while international entities, such as the United States, are offering humanitarian aid. Officials have urged the public to keep away from damaged structures and stay vigilant due to ongoing aftershocks.

Historical Context of the Earthquakes

Seismologists classify these twin earthquakes among the most powerful to strike Venezuela in over a century, drawing comparisons to the devastating 1967 Caracas earthquake. Experts assert that the immediate succession of a strong foreshock followed by an even more intense mainshock significantly contributed to the devastation.

As rescue operations continue, officials remain dedicated to finding survivors, restoring essential services, and evaluating the damage across the region.
