A court in Venezuela has imposed a 30-year prison sentence on Marggie Orozco, a 65-year-old physician, after she was accused of criticizing President Nicolas Maduro in a WhatsApp audio message. Human rights groups announced the ruling on Monday, stating it was based on allegations of “treason, incitement to hatred, and conspiracy,” which carry the maximum sentence under Venezuelan law. Reports from community leaders led to Orozco's prosecution, claiming her message undermined government loyalty; however, the audio’s content and recipient remain undisclosed.
Orozco's arrest occurred in August 2024 in the western town of San Juan de Colon amid escalating political unrest following the controversial presidential election, which Maduro's opponents and several foreign nations labeled as fraudulent. This election sparked nationwide protests, resulting in over 2,400 arrests, although many were later released. Following the turmoil, President Maduro called on citizens to report those he referred to as “fascists,” a term frequently directed at political dissenters.
Human rights entities, including the Venezuelan NGO JEP, have disclosed that Orozco experienced two heart attacks while detained. Foro Penal also reported that around 882 individuals in Venezuela are currently classified as “political prisoners.” Advocacy groups argue Orozco’s situation highlights significant issues regarding freedom of expression, the suppression of dissent, and the application of national security laws against critics. The vagueness surrounding her alleged message raises further concerns about fairness and proportionality in her sentencing.
This ruling has escalated discussions among global observers about civil liberties in Venezuela, particularly regarding the treatment of those accused of political crimes. The Venezuelan government has not commented on Orozco's sentencing, while advocacy groups persist in demanding medical care and legal protections for politically detained individuals. This case has sparked renewed debates about human rights, judicial independence, and monitoring of digital communications within the nation.
