A devastating landslide struck a bus in central Vietnam on Sunday evening, resulting in the deaths of six individuals and injuring 19 others. The bus was traveling from Da Lat to Nha Trang when it became engulfed by a sudden surge of mud and rocks, according to reports from local authorities.
The incident took place on the perilous Khanh Le Pass, a mountainous stretch notorious for its susceptibility to landslides during heavy rainfall. Rescue teams are laboring to free two passengers who are trapped in the bus, which is partially covered by debris.
Officials stated that the landslide was instigated by intense rainfall affecting the central region, emphasizing the hazards motor vehicle operators encounter during Vietnam's rainy season. Images released by local sources depict the road completely blocked by a thick layer of soil and large boulders, complicating rescue efforts.
“This road segment poses significant risks during adverse weather conditions,” remarked a local official. “We are mobilizing all available resources, including law enforcement, firefighters, and volunteers, to aid those trapped and help the injured.”
Additionally, three individuals are currently unaccounted for in Danang after another landslide incident on Friday, raising alarms about the ongoing heavy rains and resulting flooding in Vietnam.
The Vietnamese government is urging citizens to exercise utmost caution while traversing landslide-prone areas and has activated emergency response teams to monitor critical routes as well as offer immediate assistance.
This unfortunate accident highlights the escalating danger of landslides in central Vietnam during the monsoon season, prompting officials to call for heightened awareness, enhanced road safety protocols, and disaster readiness to avert future incidents.
