The White House has taken a stance against California for granting a commercial driver’s license (CDL) to Jashanpreet Singh, a 21-year-old undocumented Indian national involved in a tragic crash that resulted in three fatalities in San Bernardino County. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt referred to this case as a part of a "disturbing trend" where "criminal illegal aliens" are permitted to operate large commercial vehicles on US highways without fulfilling federal criteria.
Singh entered the US illegally in 2022 via the southern border and was released during the previous administration. He faces charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence. The Department of Transportation (DOT) is now investigating how California managed to approve his CDL.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy criticized California for failing to enforce English-language testing for commercial truck drivers and warned the state it could risk forfeiting over $40 million in federal highway safety funding for not adhering to regulations. Duffy labeled California’s negligence towards federal safety standards as "disgusting."
The catastrophic crash happened when Singh, under the influence of drugs, collided with slow-moving traffic on the I-10 Freeway, igniting a substantial fire. This incident follows a separate crash in Florida involving another undocumented Indian immigrant who held a California-issued CDL.
In light of this situation, the Trump administration is supporting the SAFE Drivers Act, a proposed bill aimed at prohibiting foreign-language tests for truck drivers and restricting undocumented immigrants from obtaining CDLs, all in an effort to enhance road safety across the nation.
California’s governor defended the state’s actions, asserting that federal authorities had granted and renewed Singh’s federal employment authorization multiple times, thus allowing him to obtain a license legally. However, federal officials insist on more stringent enforcement to avert such tragedies moving forward.
This incident has sparked a renewed discussion on the adherence to federal and state regulations regarding commercial driver licensing and immigration enforcement.
