Zelensky Stands Firm Against the US-Russia Peace Proposal for Ukraine

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In a pivotal time for Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky raises concerns that rejecting the latest peace proposal may lead to diminished support from the United States as negotiations to resolve the conflict with Russia unfold.

The plan, presented by US President Donald Trump, places Ukraine in a tight timeframe of less than a week for a decision. It includes significant compromises that heavily favour Russia—a condition that many in Kyiv and across Europe are finding hard to accept.

Zelensky Rejects Major Elements of the Proposal

Zelensky took a firm stand against the proposal during a press briefing on Friday, stating he would not agree to a settlement that compromises Ukraine’s national interests and asserted that he would offer alternative proposals.

He highlighted a challenging dilemma: either accept a peace arrangement that undermines Ukraine’s integrity or risk alienating a vital ally. He is adamant that Ukraine cannot be coerced into a deal that jeopardizes its long-term security.

Putin Backs the Suggestion With Caveats

In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed the US proposal, claiming it could provide a groundwork for a final peace agreement. However, he warned that if Ukraine rejects the talks, Russia might escalate its territorial advances.

Putin stated that Russia had taken control of the city of Kupiansk, a claim Ukraine disputes, asserting that the city is still under its governance.

Details of the US Proposal

Drafts of the proposal outline several demanding conditions for Ukraine, including:

  • Acknowledge Russian sovereignty over territories currently occupied by Moscow

  • Withdraw military forces from select regions in Donetsk

  • Limit armed forces to 600,000 personnel

  • Commit not to join NATO

  • Agree not to host NATO troops on Ukrainian territory

In return, Ukraine would gain “security assurances” and access to a reconstruction fund sourced from frozen Russian assets.

Russia, in turn, would regain access to the global economy and rejoin the G8.

Pressure Intensifies as Deadline Approaches

The White House has set a deadline of November 27, aligning with the US Thanksgiving holiday, for Zelensky to either accept the proposal or submit counter-offers. Trump has indicated some flexibility in this timeline but insists Ukraine must eventually commit to an agreement.

Zelensky has engaged in discussions with US Vice President JD Vance and conducted urgent talks with European leaders from Germany, France, and the UK. European allies have echoed support for Ukraine while expressing concerns over the proposal's heavy favor towards Russia and lack of European input.

Local Sentiments in Ukraine

Public opinion in Kyiv is split regarding negotiations under pressure. Some advocate for engagement to maintain the US alliance, while others perceive the proposal as capitulation.

A local seamstress, Yanina, 41, reflected the general discontent: “Neither side will yield. This path leads nowhere, and the war persists.”

A Pivotal Decision for Ukraine

As the deadline nears, Ukraine faces a crucial choice: whether to seek modifications, enter talks, or outright reject the proposal. Zelensky affirmed that the government will steadfastly guard Ukraine's dignity, maintaining the same resolve seen since the conflict's inception in 2022.

With contrasting pressures from Washington and Moscow, the upcoming days are set to define the trajectory of the conflict and Ukraine’s global relationships.
