Chongqing, China – An 18-year-old student has become a local hero after saving an elderly couple from a blazing apartment while dressed in only his underpants. Zhu Ye, a senior at Tongliang No. 2 Secondary School, sprang into action on October 16, when flames erupted in the neighbouring flat, reportedly due to an exploding electric wheelchair battery.
Zhu did not hesitate; he rushed to the fire-affected apartment, found the elderly couple in peril, and calmly led them to safety. The elderly woman was unaware that her legs were aflame, while the man’s wheelchair continued to emit sparks. With quick thinking, Zhu unplugged the wheelchair's battery, fetched buckets of water from his home, and began dousing the flames. He then notified the apartment security, who assisted in dealing with the aftermath and clearing the apartment.
The couple initially chose not to disclose the incident to their daughter to spare her any worry. However, the next day, security staff informed her about Zhu’s bravery. In gratitude, she visited Zhu at school with gifts of fruit and milk. She even joked about wanting him as a son-in-law due to his courageous spirit.
Zhu shared that despite his fear, he utilized emergency safety techniques he learned at school to act quickly and ensure the couple's well-being. His teacher remarked that such an act of valor was expected as Zhu is known for his willingness to help others. Additionally, he’s a talented badminton player who has won district championships for two years.
The daring rescue, conducted in his underpants, has affectionately earned Zhu the nickname “Underpants Man,” celebrated by the community for his bravery and swift actions.
Zhu’s story has resonated with many, emphasizing the significance of practical safety education and the extraordinary courage of young individuals willing to put themselves at risk for others.
