New York City: Zohran Mamdani, 34, has become the youngest mayor‑elect in New York since 1892 and the city’s first Muslim mayor after a decisive victory over former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Even so, under the current US Constitution Mamdani is not eligible to run for president.
Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 sets the standards for the presidency: a candidate must be a natural‑born citizen, at least 35 years old, and have lived in the United States for 14 years. Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda and became a naturalised US citizen in 2018, which means he does not meet the "natural‑born" requirement and therefore cannot assume the presidency unless the Constitution is amended.
Mamdani’s triumph is notable for overcoming long odds: he launched a grassroots campaign with limited name recognition, modest funding and little backing from the established political apparatus, yet prevailed in a major city contest.
In his victory remarks he said that New York would continue to be a city shaped and led by immigrants, and described himself as young, Muslim and a democratic socialist — identities he refused to apologise for.
He also vowed to begin each day focused on improving life in the city, signalling a commitment to progressive policies and inclusive governance.
Zohran Mamdani comes from a distinguished family. His father, Mahmood Mamdani, is a Ugandan scholar of Indian descent and a professor at Columbia University. His mother, Mira Nair, is an Indian‑American filmmaker known for works such as Monsoon Wedding and The Namesake.
While Mamdani’s historic mayoral victory marks a milestone for representation in New York politics, the constitutional requirement for a natural‑born citizen underscores the limits that prevent even prominent immigrant leaders from pursuing the US presidency.
