New York City’s mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani, became the city’s first Muslim and its youngest-ever mayor. His victory attracted attention not only for its political significance but also for a campaign identity shaped by Bollywood-inspired visuals that reflected his South Asian roots and an inventive outreach strategy.
Mamdani, whose parents are filmmaker Mira Nair and scholar Mahmood Mamdani, worked with designer Aneesh Bhoopathy to build a look rooted in Hindi cinema posters. Bhoopathy said Mamdani brought examples of classic Bollywood art to guide the creative direction. The campaign leaned on expressive typography, saturated hues and cinematic composition — with a palette of royal blue, cranberry red and marigold yellow and a prominent ZOHRAN rendered in a custom serif referencing vintage Hindi film posters.
The team repurposed Bollywood storytelling techniques to speak directly to immigrant and working-class voters. Short films echoed iconic moments such as Amitabh Bachchan’s monologue from Deewar (1975), while Mamdani adopted a Shah Rukh Khan–style gesture in one clip to address viewers warmly. Other campaign spots borrowed beats from Om Shanti Om and Karz to simplify voting instructions and explain policy promises.
Bhoopathy said the visual approach intentionally departed from standard political design, choosing a bold, unmistakable look that celebrated Mamdani’s South Asian identity and energetic style. That creative strategy helped his appeal among key constituencies and contributed to his decisive primary victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo and his eventual win in the mayoral contest.
Mamdani’s triumph and the campaign’s Bollywood-inflected imagery represent a notable shift in American political marketing, underscoring how cultural narratives and representation can energize voters and reshape campaign aesthetics in a diverse city like New York.
