Mamdani Signals Willingness to Work With Trump on Inflation, Living Costs

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has indicated he is prepared to engage with President Donald Trump to confront mounting economic pressures, particularly inflation and an increased cost of living. The Democratic socialist, whose election made him the city’s youngest mayor in over a century, stressed that practical solutions for residents remain a priority.

At a press briefing, Mamdani pointed to soaring grocery bills, rent and other essentials as central concerns he intends to tackle. He said he is willing to speak with the White House to explore cooperative steps that could ease the financial strain on New Yorkers.

His policy agenda includes measures such as free municipal bus travel, stronger rent controls and subsidised childcare, aimed at supporting working families facing higher costs. Mamdani framed these items as core to delivering relief where it is most needed.

He also drew a contrast with proposals put forward by former President Trump, arguing that some promises — like pausing food assistance during government shutdowns — fell short when tested in practice. Mamdani said accountability and follow-through are essential when discussing solutions.

During the briefing, Mamdani named five women to co-chair his mayoral transition team, among them Lina Khan, the current Federal Trade Commission chair under President Joe Biden, and Maria Torres-Springer, who stepped down as deputy mayor under Eric Adams after contacts with Trump came to light.

As the city moves into the transition period, Mamdani emphasised that reducing inflationary pressure and easing everyday costs are immediate objectives. Officials and residents will be watching whether federal engagement can be translated into concrete relief for those feeling the pinch.
