Zohran Mamdani has been elected mayor of New York City, the first person who is Muslim, African-born and of South Asian heritage to hold the role. The 34-year-old Democrat's victory marks a notable shift toward increased diversity in the city's leadership.
Shortly after the result, Mamdani uploaded a short video shot at the City Hall subway stop with the phrase "Zohran For New York City." The location underscored the symbolic final approach to City Hall, the seat of the mayor's office.
He is set to take office on January 1 and will be New York's youngest mayor in more than a century. Mamdani prevailed over former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
Born on October 18, 1991, in Kampala, Uganda, Mamdani is the son of filmmaker Mira Nair and academic Mahmood Mamdani. He moved to New York while still in school and became a U.S. citizen in 2018. A member of the Democratic Socialists of America, he represented Queens' 36th District in the New York State Assembly, winning the Democratic primary in 2020 and running unopposed in 2022 and 2024.
Throughout the campaign he emphasised affordability and equity. Key pledges included freezing rents on stabilized apartments, expanding subsidized housing, introducing universal childcare, making bus travel free, pursuing tuition-free education, opening city-run grocery stores, increasing corporate taxes, and raising the minimum wage to $30 an hour by 2030.
Observers view Mamdani's victory as a sign of changing political dynamics in New York and expect his administration to pursue policies focused on inclusion, cost-of-living relief and social justice.
