New York, November 5, 2025 — Zohran Mamdani has been elected mayor of New York City, making history as the first Muslim and first South Asian individual to hold the post. At 34, he will be the youngest mayor in the city in more than a century when he is sworn in on January 1. The result marks an important Democratic victory and broadens representation in New York’s leadership.
Mamdani ran on a progressive platform prioritising affordability, social welfare and equity. He defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in a competitive contest that saw turnout top two million voters, the highest participation the city has seen in over five decades. The outcome signals strong appetite among many residents for change-oriented governance.
Shortly after the result, Mamdani posted a short video on X (formerly Twitter) showing a subway train pulling into City Hall with the words “Zohran For New York City” illuminated on the platform, ending with the line “The next and last stop is City Hall.” The clip underlined his grassroots ties and resonated with supporters across the city.
Born October 18, 1991, in Kampala, Uganda, Mamdani is the son of scholar Mahmood Mamdani and filmmaker Mira Nair. He spent parts of his childhood in Uganda and South Africa before settling in New York, where he attended the Bank Street School for Children and the Bronx High School of Science. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 2014 with a degree in Africana Studies and helped establish a Students for Justice in Palestine chapter while a student.
Before the mayoral campaign, Mamdani served in the New York State Assembly and became known for advocating progressive policies for working-class communities. His mayoral agenda includes freezing rent on stabilized units, constructing 200,000 public housing apartments, providing universal childcare and tuition-free education, eliminating bus fares, and opening city-run grocery stores to combat food insecurity. He has proposed raising the minimum wage to $30 an hour by 2030, financed through higher taxes on millionaires and corporations.
While his policy platform drew significant support from younger voters and lower-income households, it also faced criticism from conservatives and business groups. National figures including former President Donald Trump have described him as radical, foreshadowing political opposition as he begins his term. Observers say the result reflects a leftward shift in parts of the Democratic Party.
As mayor-elect, Mamdani’s immediate priorities will include forming his administration and detailing concrete steps to implement his proposals. City officials and advocates expect his term to refocus attention on housing, public transit and economic fairness.
Mamdani’s rise from activist and state legislator to New York’s youngest modern mayor is being viewed as a notable milestone in the city’s political history, and a sign of growing diversity in American municipal leadership.
