Investigation Launched into Zuma’s Daughter for Allegedly Recruiting South Africans for Russia’s War

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Authorities in South Africa have initiated an investigation into claims that Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, the daughter of former President Jacob Zuma, was involved in the recruitment of South African men for participation in the war in Russia. These allegations have raised alarm and prompted high-level diplomatic discussions.

According to law enforcement, a group of 17 South African men fell victim to promises of employment and security training in Russia. Upon their arrival, they reportedly were transferred to a Russian mercenary unit and compelled to engage in combat in Ukraine. Disturbingly, eight of the individuals are said to be from the same family.

The allegations are further substantiated by an affidavit from Zuma-Sambudla's sister, claiming the men were misled into believing they would not be participating in military operations. The affidavit suggests that recruitment for military engagements was never disclosed to them.

Law officials indicated that this inquiry is in its nascent phase, with determinations regarding charges pending a comprehensive examination of the case. Authorities noted the urgency due to concerns for the men's safety in active conflict zones in eastern Ukraine.

The South African foreign ministry has confirmed ongoing communications with the governments of Russia and Ukraine to negotiate the safe return of the men. Officials described the situation as "extremely challenging" given the active hostilities complicating rescue efforts.

The men, aged between 20 and 39, previously sent distress signals seeking assistance after realizing they had been deceived. South African law forbids citizens from participating in external military campaigns without governmental sanction, intensifying the gravity of these accusations.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, who holds a parliamentary role in the MK Party established by her father, is concurrently facing charges related to violent protests that erupted in South Africa in 2021. Neither she nor her political party has released a statement regarding the current allegations.

South African authorities pledged to continue diplomatic efforts to secure the return of the men while the investigation delves into the recruitment process and the parties accountable.
