The 55th session of the Council of Arab Information Ministers was held yesterday at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo. The meeting was chaired by Syrian Minister of Information, Hamza Al-Mustafa, who succeeded Bahraini Minister Ramzan bin Abdullah Al-Noaimi. Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit also attended the session.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which currently chairs the Executive Office of the Council, was represented by Undersecretary of the Ministry of Media for International Media Relations, Khalid Al-Ghamdi. The Saudi delegation was led by Ambassador Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al-Matar, the Kingdom’s Permanent Representative to the Arab League.
The meeting focused on several important topics affecting the Arab media landscape. The Palestinian issue was at the top of the agenda. Ministers also discussed the Arab Media Code of Ethics, developments in the Arab media action plan abroad, and the role of Arab media in fighting terrorism. These discussions aim to strengthen the media’s responsibility in promoting accurate information and public awareness.
Other key topics included the Arab media roadmap for sustainable development 2030, strategies for media and information literacy, the environmental media plan, and the use of artificial intelligence in Arab media. Ministers also discussed Arab-Chinese media cooperation and the “Arab Media Capital” initiative, which seeks to enhance the regional media ecosystem and foster collaboration among Arab countries.
The council is expected to approve the new composition of its executive office for the next two years. It will also adopt the draft resolutions presented by the bureau following its meeting, which are designed to improve coordination among Arab countries on media policies and initiatives.
Saudi Arabia’s leadership role in the council reflects its commitment to strengthening Arab media and ensuring that it plays a positive role in society. By focusing on ethics, innovation, and regional cooperation, the Kingdom aims to promote responsible media practices that support both development and public awareness.
The session also highlighted the growing importance of technology in media. Discussions on artificial intelligence and digital tools emphasize the need for Arab media to keep pace with global trends while maintaining cultural and ethical standards. Ministers emphasized that integrating new technologies can improve media quality, reach, and credibility.
Through this council, Arab countries aim to work together to address challenges such as misinformation, regional conflicts, and the promotion of sustainable development through media. The session reinforced the need for coordinated policies, training programs, and cross-border cooperation to ensure that Arab media remains influential, responsible, and innovative.
The 55th session of the Council of Arab Information Ministers thus marks an important step in shaping the future of Arab media. By focusing on ethics, technology, and regional cooperation, the council aims to strengthen the role of media in society and support sustainable development goals across the Arab world.
