A strong 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck near the Tonga islands on Tuesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Despite the intensity of the quake, no tsunami warning has been issued.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) confirmed that there is no tsunami threat because the earthquake occurred deep beneath the Earth's surface. The quake was recorded at a depth of approximately 238 kilometers (148 miles), which reduces the chances of tsunami formation.
According to USGS data, the epicentre of the earthquake was located more than 150 kilometres away from the town of Neiafu in Tonga.
Authorities are monitoring the situation, but no immediate threats or warnings have been reported.
