Abu Dhabi has significantly advanced its public health infrastructure with the expansion of the Reference Laboratory for Infectious Diseases (RLID-AD). This initiative greatly boosts the emirate's capacity to identify, monitor, and address infectious disease outbreaks swiftly and effectively.
Housed within SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, the upgraded facility features state-of-the-art molecular diagnostics and high-level testing for infectious diseases. Enhanced workflows from sample collection to genetic analysis enable the lab to handle an increased number of tests, all while adhering to stringent quality and biosafety protocols. This expansion facilitates quicker diagnoses and more efficient disease monitoring, particularly in outbreak scenarios.
A standout feature of this development is the introduction of a BSL-3 mobile laboratory trailer. This specialized unit enables on-site testing directly at outbreak sites, which minimizes response times and aids in implementing immediate containment measures. Constructed to meet global standards, the mobile lab bolsters Abu Dhabi’s biosafety measures and offers a flexible strategy for epidemic interventions.
Managed by PureLab, part of the PureHealth group, the expanded laboratory showcases exemplary collaboration between health authorities and healthcare entities. Furthermore, it plays a vital role in both national and international disease surveillance, recognized by the World Health Organization as a National Influenza Centre. Beyond influenza, the lab also conducts tests for measles, rubella, and various infectious pathogens.
Additionally, the facility boasts a skilled team, with over half of its professionals being UAE nationals. This emphasis on local talent development underscores the emirate’s commitment to cultivating expertise in specialized public health and laboratory sciences.
In summary, the expansion of the Reference Laboratory for Infectious Diseases aligns with Abu Dhabi’s ongoing vision of establishing a robust, forward-looking health system. By investing in sophisticated diagnostics, mobile biosafety solutions, and homegrown expertise, the emirate is fortifying its capacity to safeguard public health and efficiently counteract emerging infectious threats.
