Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has highlighted the pivotal role of Malaysia’s civil service in the country’s impressive ranking in the IMD World Competitiveness Index 2026. While addressing a meeting with government officials in Alor Gajah, Melaka, he emphasized that this success stems from teamwork, effective governance, and the unwavering commitment of civil servants nationwide.
Malaysia ascended eight spots to achieve 15th place globally in the recent competitiveness index, underscoring one of the strongest performances in recent history. Anwar stressed that this improvement reflects the capability of public institutions and the government’s dedication to providing high-quality services.
International Recognition of Malaysia's Competitiveness
Anwar revealed that Malaysia's advancements have garnered interest from global leaders, including Turkmenistan's President Serdar Berdimuhamedov. During a recent visit, the latter commended Malaysia’s standing and expressed a desire to learn from its administrative practices.
According to Anwar, such recognition indicates that Malaysia is gaining respect on the international stage for its governance strategy and public service delivery.
Why Anwar Honors the Civil Service
In his address to civil servants, Anwar underscored that this achievement is not due to one individual but to the collective effort of the entire governmental apparatus. He noted that the efficiency and professionalism of public servants have been critical in bolstering Malaysia’s competitiveness ranking.
The Prime Minister acknowledged that civil servants play a vital role in executing policies, fostering economic growth, and enhancing services that benefit citizens and businesses alike.
Turkmenistan's Interest in Malaysia’s Governance
Anwar stated that the Turkmen President has suggested sending a team of civil servants from Turkmenistan to engage in discussions and knowledge exchange with their Malaysian counterparts. This initiative aims to explore governance practices, public administration, and improvements in service delivery.
Such proposals underline the increasing global acknowledgment of Malaysia’s administrative proficiency and the efficiency of its governmental institutions.
Highlights from the Melaka Meeting
The gathering took place at the Centre of Excellence for Engineering and Technology (CREaTE) in Simpang Ampat, Melaka. Attendees included key government figures, such as Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
They discussed government performance, reforms in public service, and strategies to elevate Malaysia’s stance in the global economy.
Commentary from GCC News 24: Malaysia's rise to 15th place in the IMD World Competitiveness Index 2026 indicates increasing trust in the country’s economic management and public administration. The recognition from international leaders further solidifies Malaysia’s image as a competitive and investment-friendly nation.
While this achievement is commendable, global competitiveness should not be gauged solely on rankings. Sustaining this momentum demands ongoing reforms, accelerated digital transformation, enhanced transparency, and policies that foster innovation, investment, and job creation.
From the viewpoint of GCC News 24, the real challenge lies ahead. Maintaining a preeminent position will hinge on how well Malaysia adapts to global economic shifts, technological advancements, and increasing regional competition. Consistency in governance and execution will be essential to transform this recognition into enduring national success.
If current reform initiatives persist and public sector efficiency remains a focal point, Malaysia has the potential to not just uphold its position but also emerge as one of Asia’s foremost competitive economies in the coming years.
