UAE and Japan Launch Joint Mangrove Carbon Research Project

UAE and Japan Launch Joint Mangrove Carbon Research Project

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a pioneering step for environmental conservation, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has partnered with Japan’s INPEX JODCO Foundation to study the carbon sequestration potential of Abu Dhabi’s mangroves. This initiative will explore both natural and planted mangrove sites to understand their contribution to climate mitigation.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Her Excellency Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri of EAD and Mr Hiroshi Fujii of the Foundation, establishing a framework for collaborative research. The study will assess how these coastal forests capture carbon above and below ground, offering critical data for both local and global climate strategies.

This effort is part of the broader Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative (ADMI), which aims to restore mangroves and blue carbon ecosystems through six guiding principles: education, engagement, research, protection, partnership, and innovation. Since its launch in 2022, ADMI has successfully attracted numerous partners, highlighting the significance of shared responsibility in preserving these ecosystems.

Mangroves are not just carbon sinks; they are essential for protecting coastlines, supporting biodiversity, and maintaining ecosystem balance. By focusing on scientific research and restoration, this UAE-Japan collaboration is expected to provide actionable insights to strengthen both environmental policies and climate action initiatives.

The project reflects Abu Dhabi’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, scientific innovation, and international cooperation, positioning the emirate as a global leader in climate-focused ecosystem management.
